A shared idea
Both categories authenticate the person holding a card through a sensor and local matching. From there, the surrounding systems diverge.
Access cards
Access products can address doors, computers and cloud services. Compatibility may involve physical-access technologies, FIDO2, smart-card standards, identity providers and enterprise lifecycle systems. The buyer is usually an organization managing employees or members.
Payment cards
Payment products must fit card-network, issuer, personalization and merchant infrastructure. Certification, transaction behavior, enrollment and cost all influence whether a pilot can become mass issuance.
Different evidence of success
For access, look for integrated deployments, renewal and expansion across a workforce. For payments, look for named issuers, repeat production orders, certification and evidence of sustained card issuance—not only trials.
The comparison question
Start with the system being replaced. A card is valuable when it reduces risk or complexity without creating a more expensive enrollment and recovery burden.
