Why FIDO2 matters
FIDO authentication replaces reusable passwords with public-key cryptography. A device-bound authenticator holds the private key, while a biometric gesture can unlock its use locally. The service does not receive the user’s fingerprint.

Recovery remains part of security
Passwordless does not mean process-less. Lost authenticators, replacement, account recovery and offboarding all need secure procedures. A strong authenticator can be weakened by a weak recovery channel.
