Template, image and result
A fingerprint image is the raw capture. A template is a mathematical representation used for comparison. A match result is the yes-or-no authorization output. Good explanations distinguish all three.
Local matching reduces exposure
If enrollment and matching happen entirely on a protected card, no central database is needed for routine authentication. That can reduce breach impact and simplify data minimization.
Follow the full lifecycle
Ask whether enrollment uses a phone or separate sleeve, whether temporary data is retained, whether backup copies exist, how re-enrollment works and what administrative systems record. Privacy claims should cover the full path, not only the final match.
Security still matters
Local storage does not automatically guarantee protection. Secure elements, access controls, tamper resistance, firmware update processes and independent evaluation all matter.
Governance questions
Organizations should document purpose, retention, lawful basis, user rights, accessibility alternatives and incident response. Technical minimization is valuable, but it does not replace responsible governance.
