A battery-free biometric card performs sensing, matching and credential operations using energy supplied by a reader. A powered biometric device contains its own battery and can support interfaces or interaction patterns unavailable to a thin passive card. Similar width and height do not make the architectures equivalent.

Why passive cards are attractive

A reader-powered card does not need charging and can fit badge or wallet workflows. It can also be inactive when away from a reader, reducing the remotely reachable attack surface. The engineering constraint is a tight power, thickness and communication budget.

Why powered devices exist

A battery enables Bluetooth, a persistent user interface, a display and explicit controls. PONE’s OFFPAD products combine a rechargeable Li-ion battery, Qi charging, E Ink display, physical button, BLE and NFC; OFFPAD+ adds USB through its holder.

The sensor does not define the finished product

PONE identifies IDEX SmartFinger sensors in OFFPAD and OFFPAD+, while IDEX sensor technology also appears in passive access-card programs. The same sensor family can therefore sit inside very different power and product architectures.

NFC behavior must be read carefully

PONE’s documentation distinguishes powered biometric operation from NFC use while switched off. Product mode can determine whether the sensor, display or PIN is used. Buyers should never infer behavior from an interface logo alone.

Operational trade-offs

Passive cards avoid battery replacement and charging support but depend on compatible readers and harvested power. Powered devices add charging, battery aging and device-state management but can provide richer feedback and connectivity. Total lifecycle cost should include accessories, help-desk processes and replacement policy.

Procurement checklist

Verify dimensions, battery and charging requirements, interface behavior in every power state, sensor model, credential capacity, certification scope, reader or holder requirements, offline behavior, firmware maintenance, enrollment, recovery and end-of-life handling.
