The short version
A biometric card places a fingerprint sensor, a processor and secure storage inside a familiar card form. When the cardholder touches the sensor, the card compares the live scan with an enrolled template. A match can authorize a payment, door entry or digital login.
Enrollment creates a template—not a photograph
Enrollment captures several impressions and converts distinctive fingerprint features into a mathematical template. Well-designed systems keep that template inside protected card hardware. Buyers should verify exactly where enrollment happens, whether any copy leaves the card and how reset or re-enrollment works.
The match happens locally
In an on-card architecture, the biometric comparison occurs inside the card. The reader receives an authorization result rather than the fingerprint itself. This can reduce exposure, but phrases such as “never leaves the card” should still be checked against the complete enrollment and lifecycle design.
Power and communication
Many cards harvest energy from a contact or contactless reader. The card can communicate over interfaces such as NFC, ISO 7816 or technologies used by existing access systems. Compatibility is product-specific; a card-shaped device is not automatically compatible with every reader.
What to evaluate
Ask about false acceptance and rejection rates, wet or damaged fingers, enrollment support, lost-card recovery, certification, reader compatibility, lifecycle management and independent security testing. User experience matters, but so does the system around the card.
